Aonuma Listening To Fans As He Creates Zelda For Wii U

Posted by Streex on August 29, 2014 at 3:15 AM

Eiji Aonuma wants to make sure we are as pleased as possible with the new Zelda game for Wii U he is working on, so he is letting it known that he is taking fan reaction to the E3 trailer into consideration during development. This sounds great on paper. We love when developers truly care what we think, but I hope he is careful in his decisions. The vocal minority don't always reflect what the majority is looking for. One of the main talking points is that the character shown may not have been Link, and may not have been male either. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with changing the sex of the main character, Aonuma wants to let it be known that is one thing he is not looking to do.

"Rather unexpectedly, after I mentioned that no one had explicitly said that it was Link [in the trailer], this speculation spread online and seems to have led to the idea that the main character will be a girl. However, this reaction from the fans is something I would like to take into consideration as we proceed with development – although that doesn’t mean that we are going to change the main character to a girl."

So the main character may not end up being female, but this does read like there is a possibility of other female characters joining Link on his quest. That would be quite interesting, and a first in the Zelda franchise that would be sure to shake up the traditional structure of the gameplay.
